This is a great beginning of year activity to identify a universal concept and to get to know the students in the class. Basically students make a collage using magazines and newspapers...but with a twist. I like to create a shape out of construction paper and have the kids fill it up with their cut-outs. One example is to trace the student's head and title the work "I Think...Therefore I Am". Another idea is to make a suitcase or "purse" shape and when it is opened the student labels the top half "Who I Am" and the bottom half "Who I Think I Will Be!" and then place two sets of before and after pictures inside the suitcase or purse. The kids loved the assignment and were thrilled to show their parents during open house. It also becomes a cute keepsake for parents.
